In 1694, mathematician Jacob Bernoulli wrote about a shape "... like a figure 8, or a knot, or the bow of a ribbon", which he called a lemniscus, after the Latin word for ribbon. In fact, the roots of this symbol are far older. Nearly every culture has some variation of an infinity sign, either in the double loop form, or as a circular shape. It is closely related to the Ouroboros, or "tail swallowing" serpent, whose coiled body is also a symbol of infinity.
