In the nineteen nineties tattoo art saw a major resurgence, the result of youthful interest in the cultural history of tribal tattoos of indigenous people. Previously, most Americans were familiar with colorful Japanese styles of tattooing that influenced the pop art styles of World War II era tattoos. New interest in one color, ethnic tribal tattoos, allude to the artistry of tribes as diverse as Celtic, Maori, Haida, Borneo and Polynesian Marquesan.
