  Altar Gallery from Gryphon's Moon

Altar Gallery

Creating an altar is an intensely personal process. Although many altars have common elements, there is no set formula for selecting them. What you choose to display will reflect the purpose of your altar, as well as your own unique personality.

Some altars act like touchstones, as a place we can come to center and ground ourselves at the end of a busy day. They are a bit of sacred space in the mundane world. Some altars may have a specific purpose, such as a healing altar, or a prosperity altar, and act as a focus for magical intent.

Customer Altar - I am the carrier of "La Calavera de las siete Potencias: ( The skull of the seven Powers), an over 500 year old skull of a powerful male Witch in my family. A great great (lots of greats) Uncle. In the Spanish tradition Brujeria or Curranderisimo (Magickal Healer the latter) always begins with a male, the family is then dominated by mostly females born with gifts. When the Witching family dies out, it ends with a female.

My younger Sister and I are the last, unless her only son starts to show some sign of sight or other hints that he has been born with the Gift. My Sister carries our Family "Libro de Sombras" (Book Of Shadows), It is only about 300 years old and has survived so much, just like the skull.

Well, take a good look at my altar, Everything is there. I keep a skeleton of a frog in the skulls mouth to keep my Ancestors quiet. Not everyone who carried the Skull was a very nice person. They all must help me when I call though, even if some really would rather not.

Balance Altar - This one is about as simple as it gets-- a window ledge holds black and white candles, and a pewter bowl with a Yin/Yang design in the center. The bowl holds tow tumbled stones-- a black hematite and a white quartz. If you're prone to going overboard in some areas of your life, an altar like this one can bring you back to your center.

Divination Altar - The altar cloth for this set up is actually a sarong. Our wooden Celtic boxes can be used to hold Tarot decks, rune stones, pendulums, and more. Silver candles represent intuition and mystery, as do the tumbled moonstones. A statue of your spirit guide or totem, such as the Vigilant Gryphon, let you call on forces outside yourself for help.

Hidden Altar - It isn't always practical (or even advisable) to have your altar set up all the time. If you need something that can be packed up when not in use, use a tall pentacle chest to hold your tools. The bottom compartment is easily large enough to hold a mini cauldron, and the top compartments can hold candles, candle holders, smudge bundles and more.

Mother Nature Altar - In the modern world, with so much of our lives encompassed by four walls and a roof, it is easy to lose touch with the natural world. This type of altar serves to remind us that no matter how hectic the rat race is, we are still only a few steps from the arms of Mother Nature. The centerpiece is a large piece of driftwood, draped with an artificial ivy vine. The Goddess figure in the center has a pattern of vines and leaves on her lower half. She is rooted in the physical plane, but lifts her arms up to connect with the spiritual world. Candles, especially green for vegetation and blue for blue skies, are always a nice touch. Pendants don't need to be hidden away in a jewelry box when they aren't being worn. Here, we've placed a Goddess pendant on one side of the altar, and a Greenman pendant on the other, creating a nice masculine/feminine balance. Although silk flowers stay fresh year round, if you can find a few fresh flowers as well, they certainly add a nice touch. Even the lowly dandelion or daisy lights up a room when tucked into a small vase. The stones at the front of the altar are aventurine, jasper, and hematite, representing the Maiden, Mother, and Crone.

Looking for more inspirations for altar set-ups? How about these ideas... -

Creativity Altar- A cauldron as a symbol of Cerridwen, a statue of Bridget, or a Bridget's cross pendant, anything associated with the element Fire, especially red candles.

Prosperity Altar- Think green! And not necessarily just for the color of money. True prosperity is not just a matter of how much you have in the bank, so you'll want to focus on growth and abundance in all areas of your life. Choose green candles, cornucopias, coins, statues of Habondia and Cernunnos, herbs, especially basil and mint.

Moon Goddess Altar- Moon Goddess statue or pendant, Moon pentacle, Moon candlestick holders, silver, white, and blue candles, tumbled moonstones, black or blue fabric for altarcloth.

Seasonal Altar- Change your display throughout the year. At Midwinter, use green and red candles, cut evergreen branches and cones, and snowflakes. In spring, feature pastel candles and decorated eggs. In fall, decorate with corn, wheat, and other symbols of the harvest.

Send us a picture and description of your altar setup and if we use it on our site, we'll send you a discount coupon to use on your next order!
