Sometimes cross stitch isn’t cute. Sometimes it’s awe-inspiring.
The Dance of the Total Eclipse Cross Stitch Pattern captures that rare, breathtaking moment when the sun and moon align and the world seems to hold its breath.
Eyes downcast, this celestial spirit spirals gracefully away from the darkened sun. The steps of her dance carry her between the stars and along the paths of planets, treading the narrow boundary between darkness and light.
Designed by Mari McDonald, this counted cross stitch pattern uses delicate backstitching, specialty floss, and accent beads to turn stitches into art.
The beautiful details make this project both challenging and deeply satisfying.
Whether you’re stitching it for your love of celestial art or to mark a moment of transformation, this pattern will remind you that even in darkness, light always returns.
The Dance of the Total Eclipse Cross Stitch Pattern has a stitch count of 146 stitches wide by 194 high.
The front has a color photo of the finished design. The chart is graphed in black and white symbols, with a table showing the DMC colors you’ll need.
The instructions are printed on six loose sheets in a resealable cellophane envelope for protection.
This is a pattern for counted cross stitch. It is not a complete kit. You will need to supply your own fabric and floss.

How much fabric do I need?
To calculate the amount of fabric you will need for your project, divide the number of stitches by the stitch count of the fabric you wish to use. The higher the count of your fabric, the smaller your piece will be. Some examples appear below. Remember to leave several additional inches as a border on each side, to facilitate framing your project when it is finished.
| Fabric count | Approximate size of stitched area |
|---|---|
| 14-count | 10 ½" × 13 ¾" |
| 18-count | 8" × 10 ¾" |
| 25-count | 5 ¾" × 7 ¾" |
