Knot Magic is a very particular form of spell casting, where a witch ties a series of knots in a cord to focus and enhance her intention. This cross stitch pattern picks up on the idea, with text that reflects the words that would be spoken while making a so-called "witch's ladder", or knotted cord. I wouldn't exactly call it a pagan cross stitch sampler, but it certainly comes close. It's truly a fascinating cross stitch project to work on, regardless.

This wonderfully witchy cross stitch pattern measures 154 stitches wide by 125 stitches high, and requires only two colors of floss. The chart calls for black and orange, but there's no reason you couldn't match it to your favorite color, or to your room's decor. This is an easy design to follow, even for inexperienced stitchers. It is printed on a single sheet of cardstock. The front has a color photo of the finished design. The back has a large easy to read graph in black and white symbols with stitch count and DMC symbol and color information.

This is a pattern for counted cross stitch. It is not a complete kit. You will need to supply your own fabric and floss.

How much fabric do I need?
To calculate the amount of fabric you will need for your project, divide the number of stitches by the stitch count of the fabric you wish to use. The higher the count of your fabric, the smaller your piece will be. Some examples appear below. Remember to leave several additional inches as a border on each side, to facilitate framing your project when it is finished.

Fabric count Approximate size
of stitched area
14-count 11" × 8"
18-count 8 ½" × 6"
25-count 6 ¼" × 5"
